Project research
The intention behind writing this paper is to identify the creative challenges of developing 2D video games, particularly in creating monotonous and tedious improvisationally intricate levels. In 2D games, the challenge surpasses the player’s expectations, but the ease of a 2D game also helps make the challenge favorable. 2D and 3D games are equally enjoyable for relevance. This paper explores different approaches to difficulty escalation through unobtrusive means such as style changes, new active enemy types, level alterations, and[2]even puzzle-solving. It incorporates all the way a player’s experience in a game can be enhanced and gamified, such as through visual and audio stimuli, narration, adaptive difficulty, and everything that is not gameplay in the traditional sense. This paper recommends constructing compelling 2D-level gameplay to create challenges without removing creativity and player interest.
The balance between enjoyment and challenge is critical in 2D video games. In this case, I suggest building challenge seamlessly to avoid disrupting the state of flow or overwhelming the player. Focusing on existing 2D games alongside their audiovisual elements, coupled with iterative design, showcases how developers maintain engagement while increasing challenge levels through increasing difficulty.
With the introduction of new enemy types, advanced design of levels, and changes to nature, developers can implement small but effective changes…impactful enough to increase the immersion and overall experience for players. Alongside adaptive difficulty systems, gamers on varying skill levels can enjoy appropriate challenges without bumping into walls of frustratingly high difficulty.
These approaches outline the evolving nature of 2D game design. Standout moments which players will appreciate now and in the future can be created by exploring the limitless frontiers of 2D gaming. The essential building blocks of these technologies will be rooted in creative groundwork, shaping innovative solutions while broadening the scope of imagination.
